A man, two women and a child died of injuries they suffered in a single-vehicle crash in Buchanan County on Friday, Virginia State Police said yesterday.
Homer Endicott, 74, of Hurley was driving a pickup truck north on state Route 641, south of state Route 83, at 11:55 a.m. when it struck an embankment and ejected Endicott and three passengers, police said.
Vivian Georgia Blankenship, 39, of Grundy; Samantha Lynn Gurman, 29, of Hurley; and Endicott died at the scene. Braxton Gage Justus, 2, of Grundy died shortly before 1:30 p.m. at a Grundy-area hospital.
None of the passengers were in safety restraints, police said.
State police reported six other deaths:
Darryl Wayne Fiorillo, 62, of Richmond died Friday at 9:25 p.m. after a crash at 3:58 p.m. in Henrico County in which his motorcycle ran off the right side of Oregon Avenue near Moncure Avenue into a ditch. He was wearing a helmet, police said.
Derrick S. Coleman, 29, of Stuart in Patrick County died yesterday when his car became airborne after striking a culvert on state Route 8 and overturned. The wreck occurred about 7:20 a.m. in Patrick.
Virginia Mae Lovett, 84, of West Virginia died Saturday at 3:30 p.m., about 90 minutes after the car she was riding in left Northwestern Pike in Frederick County and overturned, ejecting her and the driver. She was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
Stuart Cabell Pardue, 29, of Scottsville died in a single-car crash Friday in Goochland County. He was traveling on state Route 6, just west of Elk Island Road, when his car struck a guardrail at 3:09 a.m., according to police. He died at the scene at 3:27 a.m. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
Nathanial John Locke, 32, of Smithfield was traveling on state Route 10, just west of state Route 677 in Isle of Wight County, on Thursday, when his pickup truck drifted into the eastbound lane and struck a tractor-trailer and a tree and caught fire at 1:27 p.m., police said. He died at the scene at 1:35 p.m. Police were unable to determine whether he was wearing a seat belt.
Joshua Brandon Hancock, 16, of Martinsville was traveling on state Route 687, just north of state Route 811, when his car struck a tree, ejecting him, Wednesday at 1:30 a.m., police said. He died the next day at 12:33 a.m. at a Martinsville-area hospital, police said. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
There have been 614 deaths on Virginia highways this year, compared with 774 as of the same date last year, state police said yesterday.
